Photos from the Cleanup

Hello all,

thanks so much to all those – especially the new people – who came along to a very successful cleanup on Saturday morning. The weather was smashing. Also a special mention to our colleagues across the Canal in the Good Counsel GAA club who organised a cleanup of their pitch and surrounds, in tandem with ours and also helped spread the word about our cleanup. We really appreciate your support.

You can find Good Counsel at their website, on Twitter or Facebook

Hope you all enjoyed a cup of tea afterwards.

Here are some snaps.

Photo Competition – the Results.

Thanks to Noel Hills our judge and professiona photographer for taking the time to judge the competition and also provide very nice feedback. Here are his details and

Here are the results

In joint second place

Carlos Sanchez and Martina Quirke (Autumn Reflections)!

And in first place!

George O’Gorman

photo-5

Noel’s comments are here

First place: George O’Gorman

This is a lovely image of a child playing in the autumn leaves! The photographer has captured an expression of curiosity on the child’s face and the low perspective gives the viewer a sense of the experience of discovering autumn leaves from a child’s viewpoint, The colour contrast of the browns and greens in the foreground, lit from the side by the sun coming through the trees contributes to the sense of warmth, while the blue of the child’s jacket also provides a purity of contrast. The circular composition creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer through the image from the large foreground leaves, to the child placed at the centre and using both the wall to the left and the path to the right,  leads the viewer into the distance along the canal, to the blue sky at the end, while the eye is continually drawn back to the child and the golden leaves in the foreground.

Joint second place: Martina Quirke

This is a really strong graphic image using dynamic composition and powerfully saturated colour contrast . By using the winter afternoon sunlight, the photographer has cleverly composed the image, focusing on the reflections of the gatepost, fountain and pavilion in the fountain pool which provides wonderful balance in the almost symmetrical composition. The strong colour contrast between the stone and sky add to the energy of the photograph, while the spark of colour from the people sitting on the bench in front of the pavilion, creates a nice sense of perspective.

Joint second place: Carlos Sanchez

This is a well composed image, depicting the range of autumn colours from light green through amber and brown. The edges of the path create strong leading lines into the photo through the trees, to the temple at the end, while the figures walking the dog give both a sense of movement and create perspective against the old established trees. The image is beautifully framed by the tree branches and the relatively flat lighting evokes a nice painterly sense of Autumn reflection.

Congratulations to Bluebell

Heartiest good wishes to the brand new environmental group at Bluebell who had a big cleanup at the weekend and had a great turnout. That’s pretty much the whole of the canal covered from Mouth to M50!

Kilmainham Inchicore Network, Recreation and Culture Subgroup Meeting Thursday 1st December 6.30 to 7.30

After a very successful meeting on the Physical and Environmental subgroup on last Thursday, now it’s time to talk about Culture and recreational issues, opportunities, etc in Inchicore. This meeting is taking place in 205b Emmet Road – the old Ladbrokes next to Boles pharmacy – an unused space that is currently available for short term use.
It’s important to note all these meetings are about gathering as much feedback, ideas, information from locals as possible so as to better inform an overall strategy for the area. The more people that go, the richer the information that can be used to improve the area so if you have something to offer, do go along if you can.

Don’t forget – Our Inchicore In Autumn (ok Winter) Photo Competition. Closing date December 9th

Autumn (ish) Photo Competition – with prizes!

Announcing the second ever Inchicore Environmental Group photo competition!

Inchicore with canals, riverbanks, parks and whatnot can looks lovely in Autumn so we thought we’d celebrate that in a small way. Although it’s a little late, Autumn is still hanging in there. All are welcome to enter.  We are looking for snaps of Autumn – or Winter – in Inchicore. First prize is 100 euro OneForAll voucher, two runners up prizes of 50 euro tokens each If the photo isn’t exactly Inchicore but Kilmainhamish or Bluebellish or Drimnish or Rialtish that’s fine but don’t be sending us lions from the Serengeti. Likewise, it might be more wintry by the time you take. No problem, but relaxing swimming togs with a cocktail (unless you’re a masochist) or swallows building nests are a bit of a giveaway that this is an old snap.

There are some terms and conditions but they’re standard for this sort of thing.

  • There is a limit of 1 entry per person so pick your best snap.
  • All entries must be in format [jpeg or gif] and must be sent to inchicoreenvironmental@gmail.com by midnight December 9th
  • Paper copies to Inchicore Environmental Group 52A Bulfin Road, Inchicore Dublin 8.
  • By submitting a photograph you confirm that you agree that:
    • You took the photograph [in Autumn/Winter 2016] yourself – you own the copyright in the photograph.
    • You consent to the IEG publishing the photograph on its website or on Facebook and/or printing the photo and using it to publicise the work of the IEG. This is especially important to note if you plan on including any of your children in a photo.
    • The IEG will not pay any royalties or licence fee to you, the author.
    • The IEG is allowed to crop the photo or modify it in some way to render it suitable for publication.
    • You agree that the judges’ decision will be final

Photos from 8/10 & Thanks Union 8

We’re coming up in the world! Our ‘Kilmainchicore’ cleanup, strategically centred near a swanky restaurant was a huge success. Probably one of our biggest turnouts, new areas covered and a great pastry and tea welcome from the wonderful staff at Union 8. We’ll be back at some stage, not too soon or we’ll eat them out of house and home. But a great connection made and thanks to all who turned out (aged 6 to mind-your-own-business) and a special thanks to Union 8 who put their cakes where our mouths were and supported a local community initiative in a very tangible and tasty way.
